Info in Movie News | The Pacific Rim universe is now expanding and the new addition is going to appear on TV screens. Prime Video is creating a live-action prequel series inspired by Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 mecha versus monster blockbuster. The collaboration project is coming from Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios and will serve as a gateway for followers to get to know the realm of Jaegers and Kaiju with a new opportunity.
According to Variety, the series will be written and executive produced by Eric Heisserer under his Chronology banner. Heisserer is best known for penning the Oscar-nominated Arrival screenplay and recently served as showrunner for Netflix’s Shadow and Bone. This new Pacific Rim series marks the first project under Chronology’s first-look television deal with Legendary, hinting at a promising creative partnership. Although specific plot details are being kept under wraps, the show is confirmed to serve as a prequel to the original film.
The potential for future theatrical Pacific Rim films remains open, according to inside sources. This new series is expected to dive deep into the early years of the Kaiju war, before the events of the 2013 movie. That could mean exploring the origins of the breach beneath the Pacific Ocean, the first wave of Kaiju attacks, and the global effort that led to the creation of the Jaeger program. It’s also likely the series will showcase how the mental synchronization process known as “the Drift” was developed, a key element in operating the massive combat mechs.
To recall the story, Pacific Rim (2013) presented a vision of the world in which monstrous entities coming from the other side of the ocean (Kaiju) occurred. The peoples' response to dealing with giant creatures was to build Jaegers, also known as the heroes of the film, which would be operated by a pair of individuals whose brain waves were synchronized for the units to work. The life of Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) was intertwined with Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi), two pilots who were not only emotionally traumatized but also had to find a way to fight coherently to avoid the potential disastrous event. The film was a hit among reviewers and in box offices, as it made over $400 million in sales all around the world.
Pacific Rim: Uprising, the 2018 sequel, followed the storyline ten years after the original. It had John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the dissatisfied son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) playing the lead role. Even with the film bringing in new characters and Jaegers, it faced difficulty in the critical as well as box office areas in comparison to the predecessor.
With a seasoned writer like Heisserer at the helm and a platform like Prime Video backing the project, set the stage for the series to emerge as the savior of the franchise. Any information on who will be part of the cast or when the show will hit the screens are yet to be confirmed, but anticipation is already building. The fans who have stayed with 'Pacific Rim' for a long time and the new fans are both being welcomed in the franchise to get gushed again.
