Leonardo DiCaprio Stars in Paul Thomas Anderson's Radical New Movie, One Battle After Another

Info in Movie News | Leonardo DiCaprio is stepping into one of his boldest roles yet in One Battle After Another, an action-packed political satire directed by the always-provocative Paul Thomas Anderson. With a massive $130 million budget, a quirky ensemble cast, and a story that blends revolution, absurdity, and emotional breakdowns, this movie is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable and talked-about releases of 2025.

According to Variety, the movie follows DiCaprio’s character, Bob Ferguson, a former radical who’s been off the grid for years but is forced back into action when his daughter is kidnapped by an old enemy. As he attempts to reunite with his old revolutionary crew to pull off a chaotic rescue mission, Bob is both mentally unfit and emotionally unstable, making him an unusual but strangely compelling action hero.

In footage shown at CinemaCon, DiCaprio brings a surprising amount of humor and vulnerability to Ferguson. In one standout scene, he frantically tries to recall a password needed to activate a support network of fellow revolutionaries. “I fried my brain,” he admits during a phone call. “I have abused drugs and alcohol for the past 30 years. I am a drug and alcohol lover.”  His desperation is ignored with a lack of understanding by the person on the other end of the line, who informs him that his aggressive tone has caused them and that it is not a helpful reaction. It’s ridiculous, gloomy, and bizarre in a way that is quite real, nothing if not an exact P.T. Anderson movie.

The movie also stars Sean Penn as a cold-blooded military colonel, Benicio del Toro as Ferguson’s erratic right-hand man, and rising star Chase Infiniti in a mystery role that insiders say could be a breakout moment. Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor also appear in key supporting parts, and together the cast brings an unpredictable energy to an already wild script.

Shot in VistaVision for IMAX, One Battle After Another isn’t just bold in theme, it’s ambitious in scale. Anderson is clearly aiming for something massive here, not just visually, but emotionally and politically. Based on Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland, the story deals with memory, identity, and the cost of clinging to failed revolutions. If that sounds heavy, don’t worry, the trailer is packed with car chases, SWAT raids, and more than a few darkly comic moments.

The movie will likely divide audiences. After DiCaprio’s role in the divisive Don’t Look Up, it’s evident that satire with political themes can be risky. But that didn’t deter him then, and it won’t now. Some people may think that the movie’s absurdity and activism are not a good combination, while some others will definitely consider it as a very appropriate reflection of the times.

One Battle After Another, a movie set to come out on September 26, 2025, could be a leading candidate in the awards race, particularly with Anderson’s Oscar background and DiCaprio’s never-ending high-quality work in difficult roles. The movie is definitely going to be an Oscar buzz movie, even if it fails at the box office. It will still be a hot topic of discussion, and perhaps that’s precisely what was intended.
