Info in Movie News | So Ji Sub, the Korean actor that spent three years without appearing on TV, is back to the small screen with a new series “Mercy for None”, where he plays a role that his fans have only dreamt of. In Doctor Lawyer (2022), he had his last role, but now he is dressed as a character from the local gang who is going after revenge.
According to Soompi, Mercy for None is based on the hit webtoon Plaza Wars: Mercy for None by O Se-hyung and Kim Gyun-tae. The story centers on Nam Gi-jun (played by So Ji Sub), a once-feared enforcer in the Seoul underworld who made a clean break from gang life, literally. He cut his own Achilles tendon to prove he was done for good. Now, 11 years later, peace is shattered when his younger brother Nam Gi-seok (Lee Jun Hyuk) dies under suspicious circumstances. Gi-jun is pulled back into the shadows, seeking revenge and answers.
The story unfolds in a universe dominated by two criminal empires, Juwoon led by the schemer Lee Ju-woon (Heo Joon Ho) and Bongsan, managed by the cruel Gu Bong-san (Ahn Kil Kang). Gi-jun’s past with the Bongsan gang only makes it worse when his brother has just been promoted within the rival group Juwoon before his death.
The confrontation is further fueled by Gu Jun-mo (Gong Myung), the hot-headed son of Bongsan. As Jun-mo is being insulted by Gi-seok, he swears to get his revenge and thus the series of violence is initiated that goes as far as Gi-seok’s death and Gi-jun’s coming back.
So Ji Sub portrays Gi-jun with great intensity. Through the images and the initial parts of the video, it is evident that he is depicted holding a red-stained bat, glaring ice-cold at the adversaries, and walking away from the fights as a person who has been psychologically affected to the core. The change of his character to this withdrawn, revenge-obsessed persona has elicited huge excitement among the K-drama followers.
The supporting cast is just as stacked. Lee Beom Soo plays Shim Sung-won, the CEO of a shady crime scene cleanup company called Enclean, who may know more about Gi-seok’s death than he lets on. Choo Young Woo appears as Lee Geum-son, a young prosecutor and son of Juwoon’s leader, whose ambition might be more dangerous than his position.
And let’s not forget Cha Seung Won, making a special appearance as Cha Young-do, a mysterious figure who isn’t officially aligned with any gang but seems to have the inside scoop on everything. The ominous figure definitely amplifies the nerves surrounding the tense game that is yet to be completed by a long shot.
Choi Sung-eun was the director and Yoo Ki-seong the writer, Mercy for None is a no-nonsense kind of drama. Seven episodes have the time span covered and thus it is going to be a whirl of deceit, carnage, and friendship. The visual elements are very much influenced by the noir genre, the dark, mysterious alleys, and bright neon signs juxtaposed against the dull and silent atmosphere, and the rain that keeps falling without end.
This isn’t just a typical crime film. The film has complex characters and shows a story of remorse, loyalty, and the price one has to pay to start a new life without violence, only to find oneself still there.
On June 6, “Mercy for None” was released on Netflix. If you are still looking for a really good crime thriller, this movie featuring some pretty dark and complicated characters should definitely be your first choice. So Ji Sub is back, and he’s not playing nice.
