Rami Malek Ready to Return as Secret Agent in The Amateur Sequel?

Info in Movie News | Rami Malek doesn’t seem done with the world of espionage just yet. After starring in The Amateur as CIA cryptographer turned field agent Charlie Heller, the Oscar winner has hinted at the possibility of continuing the story. With an ending that was deliberately left open, and the creative team already teasing a potential franchise, fans are left wondering, will Heller return for another mission?

According to Collider, The Amateur follows Charlie Heller, a brilliant CIA codebreaker whose life collapses after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London. Fueled by grief and vengeance, Heller coerces the CIA into training him as an operative so he can hunt down those responsible.  Despite having no field experience, Heller still demonstrates his ability and finds out that a much more evil plot of the agency is involved.

What distinguishes Heller as the protagonist is that he is definitely not a conventional action hero. He is reserved, very knowledgeable technically, and definitely far from a physically strong person, so it is only his journey that is more relatable and interesting. He is a very quiet and reserved man, very talented, and certainly not the kind of person that one would expect physically strong. This just makes his story even more interesting and relatable. As the story unfolds, viewers also see his change from a desk analyst to a trained operative that still hasn't lost his emotional side.

Director James Hawes has just revealed that there are still lots of opportunities for Heller’s story to develop further. The movie’s final scene, which sees Heller reunited with his gruff mentor Colonel Henderson (played by Laurence Fishburne), was a late addition born from their undeniable on-screen chemistry. “That wasn’t in the original script,” Hawes told The Playlist. “But we felt their bond was too good to leave hanging.”

Malek has also expressed excitement about continuing the character’s journey. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, he said exploring more of Heller’s inner conflict would be a thrill. “He’s a broken soul with so much strength. I’d love to see where else his story could go,” Malek noted. “Working with this cast and crew again would be an absolute joy.”

While no script is in development yet, Hawes already has ideas brewing. He mentioned wanting to expand the story’s global reach, eyeing visually rich and timely locations like Vietnam, Cambodia, and Namibia for a potential sequel. “I’m drawn to places that are relevant, sexy, and cinematic,” he explained.

Narratively, Hawes envisions the next chapter leaning into the evolving relationship between Heller and Henderson, a mentor-student dynamic that could flip in unexpected ways. “It would be the strangest kind of buddy spy movie,” he teased. “You’d want to see them as sidekicks, learning from each other, even reversing roles.”

In spite of the fact that 20th Century Studios has not officially announced a sequel, The Amateur, however, shades the fans' connoisseur in brilliant colors. It has 88% approval rating from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes and did better than expected at the box office. Such a reception, along with well-drawn characters and an innovative interpretation of the spy genre, makes the idea of a sequel seem not so much a risk as a logical continuation.

Currently The Amateur is offered on the online services of Prime Video and Apple TV. Whether or not Charlie Heller returns to the field, one thing’s certain, audiences are ready for another mission.
