Info in Movie News | Gabriel Basso, having recently enjoyed a huge success in The Night Agent, is now venturing into the untamed world of rodeo. The actor is going to be the lead in Cowboy, a fresh Western drama which also happens to be the first time Cameron Duddy has directed a movie. Duddy is most famous for being part of the country music trio Midland. The movie is an unfiltered, music-powered and loosely woven tale about the good and bad times of the pursuit of fame on the rodeo circuit.
According to Deadline, production has already begun on Cowboy, with Basso starring alongside Ben Foster (Hell or High Water) and Rudy Pankow (Outer Banks). The story follows a ragtag group of rodeo performers, bull riders, barrel racers, and pickup men, who travel from arena to arena chasing fleeting fame and survival. It’s not just about eight seconds on a bull, it’s about late nights on the road, dimly lit bars, and the emotional weight of trying to make a dream work in an unforgiving world.
Written by Duddy and his bandmate Jess Carson, Cowboy is a deeply personal story. Duddy calls it “a raw and honest look at the rodeo world built from the dust up,” and says it explores themes of grit, humility, freedom, and the cost of pursuing something greater than yourself. Their third Midland bandmate, Mark Wystrach (The Eyes of Tammy Faye), will also appear in the movie, alongside former NFL star Taylor Lewan (Bussin’ With the Boys).
Basso continues to build on his momentum as a leading man. After playing some roles in Hillbilly Elegy and The Big C, his performance as Peter Sutherland in The Night Agent has certainly put him among Netflix’s most popular stars. He’ll next appear in the horror sequel The Strangers: Chapter 2 and Kathryn Bigelow’s political thriller A House of Dynamite. Foster, always magnetic in roles that balance volatility and vulnerability, is also set for a busy year with Long Day's Journey Into Night, Motor City, and The Stalemate. Pankow, meanwhile, remains a Gen Z favorite with his work on Outer Banks and the upcoming adaptation of Reminders of Him.
Cowboy is being produced by Lucas Smith of Endgame, Matt Graham and William Lowery of Paint Horse Pictures, and Ian Bryce of Ian Bryce Productions. Foster serves as executive producer alongside David Keinath, Jordan Yospe (DFA Entertainment), Shawn Williamson (Brightlight Productions), James D. Stern (Endgame), and Sydney Allen (Paint Horse). UTA Independent movie Group and Range Select are repping global rights.
Paint Horse Pictures, a new production banner under Range’s Nashville division, is focused on stories rooted in Americana, its people, places, and values. Cowboy serves as its first feature, with another project already in development, a Texas-based YA horror movie titled HEXAS.
With no release date announced yet, Cowboy is shaping up to be a grounded, emotional take on modern Western life, less shootouts and more soul. And with Basso at the reins, it could be one of the most compelling indie dramas on the horizon.
