Info in Movie News | Yorgos Lanthimos is back with another cinematic oddity, and this time, he’s bringing aliens, paranoia, and a reunion with two of his favorite stars. Bugonia, his latest movie, is set to arrive in theaters on October 31 and marks another team-up with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons. After the surreal brilliance of Poor Things, which earned Stone her second Oscar, Lanthimos is diving headfirst into the world of conspiracy theories, only in a way only he can deliver.
The movie’s plot is just as bizarre and fascinating as you’d expect: two young men, obsessed with conspiracies, kidnap a powerful corporate CEO, convinced she’s actually an alien sent to destroy the Earth. The CEO in question is played by none other than Emma Stone, and if the trailer is anything to go by, her character is not going down without a fight.
According to Collider, Bugonia centers around this twisted premise, but with Lanthimos behind the camera, don’t expect a straightforward sci-fi thriller. The movie is described as a bleakly funny and deeply psychological exploration of fear, faith, and the ridiculousness of the truth. Stone is at the forefront of the movie with her usual combination of charm and unpredictability and Jesse Plemons portrays a lunatic kidnapper whose paranoia energizes the whole plot.
The cast also features Alicia Silverstone, Stavros Halkias, and rising talent Aidan Delbis. Notably absent this time is Willem Dafoe, who has appeared in Lanthimos’ last two projects (Poor Things and The Lighthouse), and has become something of a mainstay in his work. Bugonia is also Lanthimos’ first feature since The Favourite that doesn’t include Dafoe, but the reunion of Stone and Plemons promises a fresh dynamic for audiences to latch onto.
The movie is based on the cult South Korean movie Save the Green Planet!, but with Lanthimos at the helm, it’s bound to take unexpected narrative detours. The trailer teases everything from intense confrontations to surreal moments of absurdity, classic Lanthimos territory.
Emma Stone’s recent work outside of Lanthimos has also made waves. She starred in The Curse, a twisted comedic thriller series alongside Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, which aired on Paramount+. She’ll also headline Ari Aster’s upcoming movie Eddington opposite Pedro Pascal, continuing her streak of envelope-pushing roles.
Jesse Plemons has been equally busy. He appeared in Zero Day with Robert De Niro, a political thriller series that topped Netflix charts. He also had a small but memorable part in A24’s Civil War, and starred in the HBO miniseries Love & Death with Elizabeth Olsen.
With Bugonia, Lanthimos is on his way to the rough-and-tumble again by characters who are very convincing going by the odd and wild things they did and tripped-out vision of Lanthimos. The question of whether Stone's character is really a foreigner or just a target of crazy suspicion is still unsolved and will probably be the reason that audiences stay fascinated.
Bugonia opens in cinemas this Halloween, on October 31. Brace yourself for one more crazy and confusing trip.
