Info in Movie News | Over ten years ago, audiences were introduced to the action-packed, time-loop thriller Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise. What many didn’t realize is that the movie was based on the Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Now in 2025, the story is being brought back in a new form, an anime movie created by one of Japan’s most innovative studios.
According to Collider, All You Need Is Kill will premiere this weekend at the Annecy International Animation movie Festival. This new anime adaptation goes Japanese to the novel’s characters' origins, thematically and visually. The location of the story is in Chiba Prefecture, Japan where it is about a strange extraterrestrial being that looked like a very large plant. It was releasing a strong electromagnetic field and high-density gases which were like the fuel to the rapid environmental collapse on the earth.
The center of the mess are two good Samaritans, Rita (voice by Ai Mikami) and Keiji (voice by Natsuki Hanae). They are sent on a quest to eliminate the invading aliens from the earth. However, Keiji finds himself in a situation where the time keeps repeating and he cannot get out of it, which is the same situation he is in every time he dies. This narrative twist, while not new to fans of Edge of Tomorrow, is handled more personally here. In the trailer, we see a Rida character that is recording each repeated death by putting numbers on her hand. This brings a psychological interpretation of the journey through trauma and repetition.
The anime is again directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, who worked on Berserk and Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. The script is written by Yuichiro Kido. He is a very knowledgeable writer who has done work on Dr. Stone, Fruits Basket, The Seven Dead Sins, and Star Wars: Visions. They have now collaborated to write a story that is bursting with suspense, real emotions, and with a lot of focus on the characters.
The animation part is done by Studio4ºC, a studio which is known for going beyond just animation and exploring various art forms. Among their previous titles are Children of the Sea, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, and the visually stunning Tekkonkinkreet. As such, the power of this studio behind the animation, All You Need Is Kill is expected to mix the psychological intensity with the surreal and eye-catching art style that has made it different from the previous incarnations of the story.
Though the general theatrical release has not been announced yet, the fact that it will have its world premiere at Annecy, one of the most prestigious animation festivals in the world, shows that this adaptation is aiming for the best.
Alongside other new titles like ChaO, Lesbian Space Princess, and Jinsei, All You Need Is Kill could become one of the breakout anime movies of the year.
For fans of time loops, sci-fi, and deeply human stories set against impossible odds, this might just be one to watch closely.
