Nami Uraraka ni, Meoto Biyori: New Fuji TV Romance Set in 1930s Japan

Info in Movie News | If you're a fan of Japanese dramas with that warm, nostalgic vibe and a touch of classic romance, Fuji TV has something special lined up this spring. Nami Uraraka ni, Meoto Biyori premieres on April 24, 2025, and will air every Thursday at 10 PM Japan Standard Time—that’s 9 AM Eastern / 6 AM Pacific in the U.S. The drama airs as part of Fuji TV’s Thursday Theater slot, which is known for showcasing emotionally rich, character-driven stories. Fun fact: this also marks Kyoko Yoshine’s first lead role in this time slot—the very same one where she made her breakout debut a few years back.

The plot is based in the 11th Showa era (approximately around 1936); it tells the unusual, but heartwarming story of the arranged marriage that occurred between Natsumi, who is called humble, and Takimasa, two complete strangers who decided to get married without even seeing each other. I mean can you just imagine that? The guy didn't show up at the wedding because he was sailing a naval training ship. And in the end, Natsumi ended up marrying his photo. The title, Nami Uraraka ni, Meoto Biyori (波うららかに、夫婦日和), matches the phrase, 'Gently Waving, Perfect Weather for a Married Couple' in English and is a metaphorical description of a marriage being as smooth and peaceful as the sea and the days being as cheerful as the weather and the love developing slowly and steadily in the union of a newly married couple.

It has built a strong and particularly loyal female fan base around the ages of 30 to 50, because the progression of the story is very slow and the romantic elements and the comedy are well balanced in a genre which has not got an overkill of tragedy. According to comic rating websites such as Comic Cmoa, BookLive, and Mecha Comic, it scored an impressive high rating, for example, 4.7, 4.5, and 4.2 respectively (as of March 19, 2025).

Fujitv, on the basis of the information, states that the forthcoming real-life version will ensure the playful spirit of the original manga, while they will change the script to some extent to make it more lively with the characters on the screen. The story's core remains the same, following on from the story of a pair of strangers who gradually become to be an item as they settle in a married life one baby step at a time.

As reported by Cinemacafe.net, that the teaser images and a brief video have been disclosed already that present the couple’s first “meeting”—Natsumi, who shyly smiles beside a stiff, serious Takimasa, they look as if they were just introduced in their wedding photo. It is very cute, funny, and insanely charming.

Kyoko Yoshine said she instantly fell in love with Natsumi and Takimasa after reading the manga. She confided, “It was so touching that I wept.” She did give a nod towards being a little pressured but, she was delighted to be playing Natsumi, a quiet, clueless girl who is in the process of being aware of love from the very start. Her co-star, Kyoya Honda (known for Setoutsumi and Tora ni Tsubasa), also found the story relatable. Their first scene together was also their first time meeting as actors. “It really felt like our characters—awkward at first, but slowly warming up,” he said.

Directed by Masaki Hirano (PICU, Shinryouka Asagao) and written by emotional drama specialist Yoko Izumisawa, the show promises delicate Showa-era visuals, grounded storytelling, and fresh chemistry between the leads.

If you're in the mood for a slow, cozy love story that’s full of heart, Nami Uraraka ni, Meoto Biyori should definitely be on your spring watchlist. Get ready to smile, swoon, and maybe even shed a tear every Thursday night.
