Gareth Evans Revisits The Raid 3 Idea After Reunion with Iko Uwais

Info in Movie News | The Raid franchise might have gone quiet for a while, but according to Gareth Evans, the story isn’t over just yet. The filmmaker behind the groundbreaking martial arts thrillers says there’s still a spark of hope for The Raid 3, it just hasn’t caught fire yet.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Evans shared that although he once had a concrete plan for the third movie, the idea was eventually shelved as time passed and other commitments took over. “I had this concept that was supposed to happen right after the end of The Raid 2,” Evans explained. “It literally picked up just minutes later, but then I got busy with other projects, and so much time passed that it no longer felt like the right story to tell.”

At that point, he figured it was best to move on. With The Raid 2 ending on a strong note, he didn’t feel pressure to force a follow-up just for the sake of it. But all of that changed during a trip back to Indonesia in 2022.

While visiting for the summer, Evans had a long-overdue reunion with Iko Uwais, his creative partner and lead actor in both The Raid movies. The two hadn’t seen each other in person for about seven years, though they’d stayed in touch online. Meeting face-to-face again was a turning point for Evans.

“There’s something different about actually seeing someone again after so long,” he said. “I’ve always seen Iko like a younger brother, but during that visit, I saw someone who had grown and matured so much. That changed the way I see him, and at that moment, a new concept for The Raid 3 just popped into my head."

Evans kept the details of the new idea to himself, but the most important thing is that he is really open to everything. "This could be something to go back to in the future," he said. “And if I do it, I want it to be the right version of the film, something that actually feels like it deserves to be called The Raid 3.”

He also acknowledged how passionate and patient the fan base has been over the years. “I’m really grateful for all the love the fans have shown, so if we ever make another one, it has to live up to what they’re expecting, or better.”

For now, fans can dive into Havoc, Evans’ latest movie starring Tom Hardy. Streaming on Netflix, the movie follows a corrupt detective battling his way through a tangled criminal underworld to save a politician’s missing son. Evans has called one of the set pieces in Havoc the biggest action sequence he’s ever tackled, which says a lot coming from the man who brought us The Raid hallway carnage.

Actor Iko Uwais, who has risen to fame since the grand success of The Raid and The Raid 2, started working beyond his career's horizons and went international by taking part in American and Netflix productions. He performed with Mark Wahlberg in Mile 22 (2018), was showcased in his ability for comedy in Stuber (2019) with Kumail Nanjiani and Dave Bautista, followed by a character who was into Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021). For online distribution, he spearheaded the Netflix's martial arts series Wu Assassins (2019) as a San Francisco cook who becomes a hero in a mysterious fight over the ancient energies. Moreover, his role was depicted in the subsequent movie Fistful of Vengeance (2022) as a character who embodies silat in practice, being the main contender once again.

Well, if nothing else, The Raid 3 is definitely not a disappeared project. Maybe it is now a potential opportunity, or the next blockbuster that will take years to come back.
